Two-day Mountaineering Ireland courses covering map reading, compass work, night navigation, and emergency procedures
Little Big Adventures Ireland is a certified Mountaineering Ireland Mountain Skills provider. The Mountain Skills scheme is broken into three separate elements independent of each other. Mountain Skills 1 and Mountain Skills 2 enable students to learn the necessary skills to be safe on the mountains. While those wishing to progress a career in the mountains will choose to undergo a Mountain Skills Assessment which is the standard gateway to becoming a Mountain Leader.
Mountain Skills 1 is run over two days and introduces the basics of mountaineering to students. It focuses heavily on navigation and teaching people how to interpret a map to the ground around them. You will be introduced to planning a day in the mountains and how to choose the best route for you and your group. Emergency procedures are also taught, and we take an in depth look at what equipment to bring with you on the mountains. This course is run at a maximum ratio of 1 instructor to six students and costs €150 per person with discounts available for group bookings.
Mountain Skills 2 builds on the skills learned in Mountain Skills 1 and is run over two days. Here we focus on the use of a compass in poor weather visibility. We also spend an evening on the mountains navigating in the dark and we teach people to be comfortable at nighttime in the mountains. Navigating at night is a necessary skill for those wishing to catch those late evening sunsets or early morning sunrises from a mountain perch without having to spend the entire night on the mountains. We also fucus on movement in complex terrain and how to move efficiently across steep slopes covered in scree. We introduce the basics of scrambling and show the students how to get through rocky sections of mountainous terrain. This course is run at a maximum ratio of 1 instructor to six students and costs €150 per person with discounts available for group bookings.
